turning right again

Coming off the first oval of the 2003 Toyota Atlantic season in Milwaukee a couple of weeks ago, Jonathan Macri is ready to turn right again as he takes the 2.238-mile road course at the Mazda Speedway Laguna Seca in Monterey, Calif. Macri, driver of the Polestar Atlantic No. 84 NTN Bearings Toyota Swift race car, is currently second in the championship points, just two points behind A.J. Allmendinger.

“We are looking to close the gap this weekend and capture our first win,” said Macri, who has already had two podium finishes this season, Long Beach and Monterrey, Mexico. “I have run this track before and although it’s a challenging road course, I feel pretty comfortable driving here at Laguna Seca. We just tested here a month ago and ran some fast times. So, I am looking forward to this weekend.”

training hard

Macri says running on a road course requires a different physical fitness routine than an oval track. With Laguna Seca and Portland ahead of him, Macri has been preparing heavily with a lot of cardiovascular training.

"I have been focused on the two road course coming up, this weekend and next weekend (June 21) in Portland,” stated Macri. “I have been pushing myself to train extra hard by mountain biking and running in the last couple of weeks since Milwaukee. At the next two tracks there's lots of g-force so I have to work on my legs more."
