At Chicago Motor Speedway, CART Toyota Atlantic drivers braved over 130-mile-an-hour speeds as they qualified in preparation for tomorrow’s race, part of the Target Grand Prix weekend.

Having posted a 6th-position finish in the morning practice session, Gormley Ontario’s Jonathan Macri raced his NTN Bearings Swift to 4th place in qualifying this afternoon.

“I had a good run,” Jonathan said. “The car still had some under-steer. I could have pushed harder – there was more in the pedal, but I decided not to considering my under-steer and the fact that my tires were still not at their optimum performance temperature. I’ll definitely settle for 4th place, though, and I am looking forward to tomorrow’s race.”

The 4th place grid position is the highest Jonathan has qualified this season and, ironically, it was accomplished on an oval, which, Jonathan admits, he has little experience running.

“I’m starting to get more comfortable running ovals. I can’t say I’m at a 100%-comfort level, but I can say that I’m probably as comfortable as anyone could be after running only three ovals this year,” Jonathan said.

Notwithstanding the under-steer problem that nags Jonathan, he is happy with the car’s overall performance.

“We made a down force adjustment to the car after this morning’s practice. Tomorrow’s warm-up session will be good ground to test the car after we make some minor adjustments. At this point, we’re are happy with the car, and keeping it pretty much the same,” he said.

Jonathan will be deep in the fray of competition in his NTN Bearings Swift as he battles for position with the three front-runners tomorrow: grid leader Hoover Orsi, Tony Ave and Rocky Moran. Round 7 of the Atlantic Championship will be run at noon Sunday local time and will, no doubt, provide some exciting wheel-to-wheel competition.
