Cart Toyota Atlantic drivers took to the 1.521-mile Circuit Trois Rivieres for the second and all-important qualifying session early this afternoon in preparation for tomorrow’s Atlantic Grand Prix.

Jonathan Macri piloted his NTN Bearings Swift to a fifth place qualifying position. An excellent result for the 19-year-old Gormley, Ontario Atlantic rookie, who managed to better his 12th place provisional qualifying result yesterday by seven spots.

“I’m feeling great today, definitely a lot better than I was yesterday,” Jonathan said after qualifying. The team did an excellent job after yesterday’s provisional qualifying. We knew we needed to make some significant changes to the car. The new set up paid off and I realized this at the morning practice session. The car ran really well and I felt comfortable driving it. When it came time to qualify, I didn’t hesitate to push the car harder”.

Jonathan clocked his fastest time with four laps remaining in the session, and with Hoover Orsi, pace leader just in front of him.

“I was behind Hoover Orsi, and so I thought I could get a good tow off him, which I did," Jonathan said. "I ran quicker and bettered my time. I’m looking forward to racing here tomorrow. We’ll probably make just a few minor adjustments to the car to try to make sure that it runs consistently because it will be a long race. Otherwise, I think we have a good competitive car. All I can hope for is to run a clean race and to try to take advantage of any errors front-runners make to gain a few positions. There aren’t any good places to pass on this track, so patience is going to be key in this race.”

Martin Basso was second to Hoover Orsi today in qualifying. David Rutledge and Michael Valiante managed the 3rd and 4th fastest qualifying times.

The Atlantic race, the feature of tomorrow’s Grand Prix de Trois Rivieres, is the 8th of a 12-race Atlantic Championship season.
